From the District Chairman........

At a recent District Committee Meeting, a Scouter came up and asked, “What does the District do and how can it help my unit?” That is a good question. What does the District do? I would like to answer that question with a series of communications to our District.

Doug Kirk
Chairman – Cherokee Pickens District

What is the District?

A District is a geographic part of a Boy Scout Council. In our case, the District covers Cherokee and Pickens counties, hence Cherokee Pickens District. We are one of 19 districts in the Atlanta Area Council. A District, as an extension of the Council, has the goal of “ensuring the growth and success of Scouting units within the districts territory”. By working with the chartering organizations and units, we can build a better program reaching more youth.

The District has four major functions:

Membership – The membership function strives for growth through the organization of new Scouting units and growth through new members joining existing units.

Finance – The finance function sees that the district provides its share of funds to the total council operating budget.

Program – The program function concentrates on helping Scouting units with camp promotion; special activities including community service; training adult volunteers; and youth advancement and recognition.

Unit Service – The unit service function provides direct coaching and consultation by district volunteers for unit adults to help ensure the success of every Scouting unit.
(From The District, BSA #33070)

The first three: Membership, Finance, and Program are the responsibility of the District Committee. The fourth function, Unit Service is carried out by the District Commissioners. By performing these four functions, the District servers the units and promotes Scouting

In the next topics I will look at the District functions in more detail.
