New Order of the Arrow Unit Election Procedures

Bert Ogletree
Scoutmaster BSA Troop 37
Canton, Georgia
December 10, 2011, 2011

My fellow Scoutmaster, please let introduce myself. I am Bert Ogletree, Scoutmaster of Troop 37 in Canton. I am also the adviser to the youth running the elections for our local Order of the Arrow chapter, Achewon Woapalanne, who serves the Cherokee Pickens District of Scouting. The Order of the Arrow is the Boy Scouts of America’s National Honor Camping Society. We are a service oriented organization serving our community, council, and district which is made up of willing, experienced youth and adult Scouting campers. Possible candidates should be those you, as Scoutmaster, would be considered proficient in camping skills and exhibit Scout Sprit in their daily lives. Those unwilling to serve in this organization, our do not meet these requirements need not be considered regardless of other eligibility requirements. This is to be the guide in both youth and adult candidate consideration.

This is my second year in this advisor role and after careful review of the previous elections procedure, it has been decided by the leadership to try something different and revamp the entire elections process. In this year’s process the qualifications set forth by the National Order of the Arrow policy does not change for any youth or adult being considered. However the way the actual election is performed has.

First:

Every troop in the district will need to follow this trial process see how effective it is. Any troop not following this procedure will not have a valid or recognized election in the calendar year 2012. Your cooperation in the endeavor is greatly appreciated.

The process will be reviewed after this year’s elections as a guide for future elections.

The process is as follows:

  • You, as the Scoutmaster, will receive a packet via e-mail containing a few forms and a survey. The designated forms will need to filled out and returned to an e-mail address along with a few
good dates for your troop to hold its’ election. The remaining forms will need to be filled out and ready to be handed to the elections team on your election date.

  • After the forms and dates are received an election date will be set and an election team assigned for your election. You will be notified via e-mail which of your dates was selected. Please make every effort to promote this election night and have as many youth present as possible. In the majority of troops in the Cherokee Pickens District, the complete elections process should take 20 to 30 minutes, including the summer camp promotion presentation. After the election is complete you will be notified of the results.

I know this is a simplified explanation of what is going to be done, but it is a simple process. As a Scoutmaster, I too will be following all these procedures.

I also want to say thank you in advance for your help in improving this process.

HERE'S a printable version of this information.

Yours in Brotherhood,
Bert Ogletree
Scoutmaster
