The Atlanta Area Council is sponsoring Scouting for Food again in 2012.
We need your help to put a stop to hunger!
Scouting
for Food is more than the largest Scouting service project in the Atlanta
area. It is one of the largest food drives as well. To put it in real
terms, because of the work of the leaders and Scouts, Scouting for Food
will provide more than 140,000 meals for needy Georgians during the spring.
For some food pantries, Scouting for Food is one of the primary sources
of food from March through July. Without Scouting for Food, people go
hungry!
We ask
that Unit promotes 100% participation in Scouting for Food. Units will
distribute Scouting for Food bags on a Saturday in March to each home
in their designated territory. Because of our council’s growth,
your unit may be asked to cover an area other than your traditional area.
Remember, the object of Scouting for Food is for as many Scouts as possible
to cover as much area as possible.
Here
is what you do:
Recruit your Scouting for Food Unit Chair - someone that will organize
and promote the project and be a liaison between your unit and your
District Scouting for Food Chair. Fill out the info form and return
it to Shawn Kwak.
All Scouting for Food Unit Chairs should attend the February roundtable
for details and distribution of bags and supplies
Have the Unit Chair register your unit on the Atlanta Area council
website by Clicking
Here. Be sure to get a good count of how many Scouts you expect
to participate for the patch and bag request order.
On March 10th, Scouts will distribute the flyers to homes with instructions
on returning pick-up dates.
On March 17th, Scouts will pick-up the full bags of canned goods and
other nonperishables from houses and deliver them to one of 3 central
drop off locations.
Count and collect the food, load into vehicles and deliver it to the
specified collection location.
Food collected in the Cherokee area will remain in the area for use
by MUST Ministries and for Pickens by CARE Ministries.
Did
you know? That scouting for Food provides more then 140,000 meals for
needy Georgians during the spring? For many food pantries, Scouting for
Food is one of the primary sources of food from March through July. Without
the continuing efforts of scouts units, people go hungry!!

Family
Friends of Scouting Campaign
Dear
Unit Leaders,
As you
begin, and many finish, planning your unit's program calendar for 2012,
I remind you our hope is that every unit participates in the district's
annual Family Friends of Scouting Campaign. With December just a few weeks
away, there is no better time than now for your unit to invite a Friends
of Scouting representative to your next Court of Honor, Blue and Gold,
Pinewood Derby or other highly attended unit gathering.
Your
unit's participation plays a vital role in ensuring that a premier Scouting
program is available for the many thousands of youth and adult volunteers
that are part of the Atlanta Area Council. You may not realize it, but
Friends of Scouting helps secure the funds needed to support unit programs
such as training, insurance, program materials, advancement materials,
camping facilities and programs, council and district activities, and
much more. Attached, you will find a detailed list of the many services
offered by the Atlanta Area Council.
As the
Council's primary source of funding, Friends of Scouting provides more
than a third of the money needed to operate per calendar year. Our district's
piece of the pie for the 2012 Family Friends of Scouting Campaign is $50,000.
It is imperative that we achieve that goal to help Scouting thrive for
you and the children of your unit.
I ask
that you please complete the Family
Friends of Scouting Campaign Contact Form by December 1, 2011 to set
a date for your Friends of Scouting presentation. Your participation will
help train young people throughout the Atlanta Area Council in citizenship,
service, and leadership, as well as prepare them to make ethical and moral
choices over their lifetimes. Thank you for leading by example and being
among the first to schedule your Family Friends of Scouting presentation,
and thank you for your continued commitment to Scouting.
Yours
in Scouting,
Barb Kish

4th
of July Parade
Hi
Scouters
Last
year, 10 Packs in Woodstock joined forces at the 4th of July parade.
There were no floats, no banners, no candy just Cub Scouts. The impact
was great, 150+ boys marching behind pack flags and 1 American flag;
it took over a minute for the Cubs to pass.
We
would like to encourage all the units (Boy Scouts, Cub, Venture, Varsity,
and Explorer) in the district to join forces this year, at their local
4th of July parade.
Lessons
learned:
• Have the
scouts carry the flags at the front of the formation behind 1 American
flag. Rotate flag holders as needed
• Group the scouts by unit type (Boy Scouts, Cub, Venture, Varsity
and Explorer)
• Request that only scouters and parents of special needs scouts
join the parade
• Request that all scouts and scouter wear the Field uniform
(Class A). But don’t turn any scout away
• Have a truck with water at the rear of the formation.
• Have a district scouter pass out generic recruitment flyers;
this should not be a unit specific recruitment
• Have 1 banner behind the American flag that says Scouts of
town(s) X with the logos of each type.
• No unit specific floats
