DONATIONS NEEDED
Give A Kid
A Chance is a program designed to start the school year out on
the right foot for children in need in Cherokee County. Organizations
(churches, businesses, ministries and individuals) work together to
provide backpacks and school supplies for each elementary, middle
and high school student who has been registered through MUST Ministries
in Canton.
Services offered our guests on this day include vision,
hearing, dental and chiropractic screenings, haircuts and blood pressure
checks. Each family can shop from a collection of like-new clothing,
and enjoy lunch while listening to live music. All events and supplies
are provided at no charge for the registered students and immediate
family. A voucher must be presented to receive a backpack and school
supplies.
The outreach has grown so much for this year - we've
come serving 100 children 3 years ago to the potential of serving
thousands this year! We need volunteers, supplies, and organizers.
See how you can be involved by emailing Candi Hannigan at candicehannigan@yahoo.com.
Come Set Sail on a new Adventure with Sea Scouting
Interested in learning to sail? Steering a boat? Learning
to navigate open water?
You can do this and much more in Sea Scouting. Sea Scouting is a BSA
program for young adults, both boys and girls age 14 to 21. So if
you love boats and being on the water, want to learn the skills of
the sailor, and can work to achieve both team and personal goals,
then sea scouting is for you.
The Cherokee Pickens District is forming a new Sea
Scout Ship out of Lake Allatoona and we want you. If you are interested
in joining or just need more information please contact Gary Holcombe
at (678) 520-5534 or ghol@bellsouth.net or Elliott Lam (404) 545-8761
or elam@atlantabsa.org
Remember back to your Wood Badge course. For most
of us it was a life changing experience that gave us the tools
needed to be better leaders and improve scouting. Youth at every
level of Scouting deserve a well-trained leader. It's only through
volunteer leaders that Scoutings' promise can be delivered to
the youth it serves. Those leaders must have the best possible
training to do that and, as you remember, that's what Wood Badge
provides.
The
Atlanta Area Council offers three Wood Badge courses each year.
Our best advertisement for those is you: leaders who are Wood
Badge trained and know how it helped you be who you are today.
Over and over again we hear from Scouters like you that the application
of the training you received hasn't been limited to scouting.
Wood Badge participants tell us the skills they learned during
the course have been invaluable on the job, in their place of
worship, on athletic teams and at home.
Our favorite Wood Badge story is from a 2007 participant
with eight (8) children. After his first weekend he came home
and implemented the patrol method with his family. They rotate
the patrol leader each week giving the older children a break
from their responsibilities and allowing the younger children
an opportunity to be "in charge". His wife was so impressed
she attended the next Wood Badge course.
As the 2008 Atlanta Area Council Course Directors,
we're asking for your assistance in identifying
potential Wood Badge participants. Having been through the course,
you understand the power it has to change lives and the impact
it can have on the youth our movement serves. If you are still
active in Scouting, you undoubtedly know at least on leader who
would benefit from attending.
Please take a few minutes to jot down names and
phone numbers for those Scouters. Send them to Michelle Gillett
at mggillett@gmail.com. Michelle will share with us and we'll
make sure each candidate is contacted personally. Please take
the time to do it today, it will make a difference in youth's
life tomorrow.
And if you attended a "legacy course"
– a course that was offered prior to Atlanta Course 92-41,
we have a special offer: you too can experience the best adult
leader training the BSA has to offer today, you can travel back
to Gilwell! If you'd like the rare opportunity to have a 2nd Wood
Badge experience, give one of us a call and we'll explain how
you can do that.
Thanks for all you've already done for Scouting…and
thanks for helping the youth our movement serves one more time!
